WHY KNOT?
Rhizome – Connection – Icon
The works of Sabine Schäfer are based on aesthetic principles of a basic attachment of the world of the universe, as well as the digitalised world. The underlying connection between the universe and the digital world is of linguistic nature and produces in the figurative numerical/digital space creations, resulting from a large number of concatenation (series of interconnected or interdependent things or events) which is known today as hybrid.
At the end of the 20th century Heinrich Klotz spoke about the style of the “Second Modern” (“Zweiten Moderne”) age a period where artists concentrated upon the analysis of the narrative means, expressing themselves particularly with the new media in a fictive manner that played with the potential of developing new stories. Today we have to deal with a growing number of the creatures who break into the digital world from the real world: The technological and natural sciences have increasingly entered variegated discourse of communicative connections, unions according to the rules of creative linking/ties/knots. Besides the generated hybrids, that not only have new material qualities, they can also be read with looking at their codes. In the contradicting contexts between the natural-like world of the rhizome and the abstracted world of the signs, marks and icons connecting patterns between the analogue and digital world become discernible.
The exhibition has been conceived as an audiovisual installation, that brings not only light to sound, but shows in the work of Sabine Schäfer and her collaborators, just how the connections produce a diversity of dimensions that in our time stamping a synesthetic experience in an analogue world accompanied by digital reality.
The use of the QR codes as an integral imaging component and as an element to afford access to the audio-compositions leads at the same time to basic principles and elements of communication as a process of life.
