Bats’n’Insects is a site-specific immersive installation for the glass facade of the ZKM Music Balcony.
The echolocation of bats, inaudible to humans, was processed by sound microscopy and made audible. Via small sound transducers on the glass façade, the compositions become audible by means of the vibrations of the glass, moving widely over the glass façade and thus creating a special spatial sound experience.
The window glass becomes an artistic material and a substantial component of the room installation. The animal sounds used come from the scientific sound archive of the bat researcher Dr. Annette Denzinger.
The glass façade is at the same time a carrier of oversized transparent silhouettes of bat species and insects, whose shapes overlap with the sound transducers.
Thus both come together: seeing and hearing.
The thematic examination of the two artists lies in the current context of climate change and the Corona pandemic. The bat is artistically thematized as a symbol for the threatened biodiversity in nature as well as the intertwining and compression of our world: the world of animal life and the world of humans, who ultimately threaten the space for both with their intrusion into their natural habitats.
The project is supported by a grant from the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts Baden-Württemberg.
