Components
The parts of the artwork are three pics, through which you can hear sound.

  1. Visual
Three framed prints, size about 100 cm (width) x 70 cm (height)
Each foto shows a natural scene in three main colors red, blue and yellow, including a QR-code.
The QR-codes are designed like abstract forms of insects like butterflies
  2. Auditory
A micro controller size about 15 cm (length) x 10 cm (width) x 4cm (height) connected with a WLAN antenna , size 7 cm (length), Ø ca. 1 cm and integrated SD card, where are stored two to three binaural sound compositions , called “Audio  Biospheres”. Duration about 5-7 minutes loop.

Functionality
Through scanning the QR-code the visitor gets an isolated WLAN transporting an audio composition to his earphones connected to his smartphone. Thus the artwork itself is transferring the sound imposition to the visitors smartphone after scanning the QR-code. The QR-code app can be downloaded for free at any AppStore.

Composition
The parts of the composition are “Audio-Biospheres” taken from natural sounds and transformed through a special process, called “EndoMikroSonoSkopie”, developed by the artist Joachim Krebs and developed to an artificial sound composition. The audio compositions are transferred into binatural versions to listen, so that the visitor is getting an intense three dimensional experience of sound.

Assembling
After getting the micro introducer and the antenna together turn on the system. Make sure, the micro controller is in close position to the prints, ca. 20 meter around and at the same floor.
Don’t put the micro controller behind metal doors or under metal plates as this will disturb the connection.

Transportation
The prints and the micro controller will be sent via snail mail

Finishing of the artwork
The whole artwork will be finished by July 2017. Although you get three huge prints, the main artistically parts are the audio compositions.

Attachments

  1. MP3 – example of the audio composition, duration about 10 minutes.
  2. Print example. The QR-codes are designed as animals, for example butterflies.

Selling price
Euro 2.500 per print. The selling price compensates all author’s fee for the sound composition. The copyright remains to the artist.

…The sound characteristics that have major importance particularly for the artificial consistency formation are often concealed from the bare ears, e.g. because they are beyond the human frequency audio barrier or because their rhythm sequence is too fast, i.e. they have an impulse density that is too high. In these cases, the procedure of Space-sound-Microscopy renders a valuable service to make that audible which was previously ”non-audible”, but already existing.
As in the reproduced SEM image of a fly’s leg (fig.1+2) whose discernibility (”What is that?”) – similar to a picture puzzle – becomes less when a smaller fragment (”fragment patterns”) and a higher magnification factor for the audio-microscopy is selected, the ”concrete content matter” is increasingly dissolved and transferred into an ”abstract expression matter”. However, this process is not completed, so it is possible for each listener’s imagination, beyond (extra)musical meanings and contents, to develop individual, audio-inspired imaginations in an ”InterZone”, in permanent fluctuation between (!) ”pure” naturalness and ”sheer” abstraction. This succeeds even better as the animal voice, the sound of nature or the sound of metal also become something ”else”: ”sheer” line, ”sheer” space, ”sheer” colour, ”sheer” sound, ”sheer” rhythm, ”sheer” movement … ”sheer” being.

Sabine Schaefer is working for about 15 years together with her partner Joachim Krebs and continues the Atelier <SA/JO>  after his dead in 2013. Her focus of her long term art work and research is the space sound microcosms of animals and nature in general – the animal ‘s audio world of melodies, rhythm and harmonic resonance hiding inside the micro – and macrocosms of nature.

Ongoing
A retrospective exhibition and show „Joachim Krebs: Deleuze und der Sampler als Audio-Mikroskop“ about his oevre in sound art and -aethetics is presented at the ZKM, Center for Art and Media Technology in Karlsruhe, open from May, 18th to July, 6th.
