Scaled Perceptions. Material meets Digital
With the trio of the upcoming exhibition, CAS presents in its rooms for the first time pioneers of media art from the surroundings of the ZKM who, despite all their differences, have one thing in common, namely a spirit of departure that, as a result of artistic-scientific laboratory studies, also shows itself critically precisely in the implementation of what is feasible.
The current topic of rescuing early works of media art is currently bringing about a general retro movement, as it also and especially appears in the works of the artist duo “Station Rose”. Each time after such a rescue operation, the old “fabric” shows up in a new digital dress and is available for free redesign and rescaling. Similar to Historicism, historical developments now appear synchronously on a common digital platform. Once again, for example, the old Amiga history makes an appearance and shows how the pioneers of digital art worked as bloody beginners.
In their turn to analog image and sound material, this phenomenon is also present in the works of Sabine Schäfer and Annette Hünnekens, and here, too, a retro movement is indicated, which, however, does not see itself as the result of a rescue operation, but rather, instead of going back to nature, takes a third path, which can also be described as hybrid.
For whenever it is a matter of scaling, transmission and translation processes, in which the work is transferred into synchronizing sign worlds on several levels, so that their synaesthetic qualities emerge, differences disappear in favor of integrative phenomena in a universally suspended temporality and spatiality.
Ultimately, this transit situation leads to a completely different system of orders and structures, which, however, can only be guessed at in the present state of transition.
On display are works with augmenting techniques of the QR code and augmented reality (AR) as well as video projections, photo-print graphics on Alu Dibond and canvas as well as textiles and textile bodies.
